I have two bassets that are brothers and they have always been big eaters of course....bassets love to eat! For about 3 or 4 days now they aren't eating. They will have a few bites and then just leave it. We normally feed them at 7AM and 7PM....they are now just having a few bites once a day. Then yesterday one of them wouldn't even take their treat. I'm worried...does anyone have any ideas? Should I get them into the vet asap? Thanks for any help!

My guess is if they are acting healthy, no intestinal problems they are acting like normal 1 year old boys do. And what one does the other one follows. Young boys go thru this, unneutered males are worse. And if you play the game and worry it will become a bigger game to them. IF they are healthy I have a game plan for this but it is not easy for the sappy owner. I just went thru this a few days ago with some other owners.
There is a strict plan to follow but if you falter in any way the dogs will have your number and the game will continue.
Separate them first of all for feeding time. You are already on a schedule, if you are not adding water to the food start doing it. Put their food down give them 10 minutes to start eating. If they walk away or stop in any manner pick it up put it in the refrigerator and do not give them dinner. They are not allowed any treats of any kind, no crumbs nothing. This part is very important any tidbits will be enough to keep the game going.
The next morning put the food back down separating them again. If they can see each other and watch each other to see if one or the other is going to eat, put them in different room. Same plan 10 minutes pick it up. wait another 24 hours. This may go on for 3 days. Don't panic they won't starve to death but they will get mighty hungry. Do not be tempted to try to give them dinner. This is why I say it is not for the weak of heart. Don't let those sad eyes fool you into submissiveness. If you can stick with the plan you will have great eaters. Another trick people try when the dogs stop eating is changing food to see if the dog will like something else. Don't fall in that trap either. If you have a premium quality food there is no need to change. It wont alter their behavior to change the food. It will just get you more frustrated. And when they can see what their bad habits are doing to you it makes the game all that more fun to play.
Bassets are notorious for game playing with their owners. People say they are dumb... Not a chance!!!

We are an elite group of sappy idiots. You don't understand the love until you own one or 2 or 3 or 15. Good luck and if I can help you further I am only a few key strokes away. I am off to bed. I work at the vet clinic tomorrow. It pays for my nasty habit Tells us more about yourself and your babies and where you live. And we are gluttens for pictures.

Boys will be boys and that means they are picky eaters. Listen to Jane's wisdom it works wonders. Our boy Beau is a picky eater as well but not so much any more. I second the fact that we need more pictures. And welcome to the forum.

So I gave it a try this morning and it was hard like you said it would be. Reggie (the brown and white one) wouldn't eat. I've been using water since they were little and the same food too. It's a great food that the vet recomended and it makes their coat so shiny. Anyway...staying on track...Deuce (the black and white one) ate like a champ. So I put Deuce outside and gave Reggie a little time to decide what he was going to do. Still only a few bites and he walked away. I put the food in the fridge and let him outside too. When I put them up I gave Deuce a treat and not Reggie. It was hard because of those sad eyes. Plus Reggie has been lifting up his back left leg like he hurt it rough housing....so it made it even worse. The worst part is this morning we were laying around together before I left for work Reggie's stomach was growling! Hopefully he will learn his lesson quickly and start eating! Stubborn little guy! So about us....My name is Haley and I'm 26 years old. I moved in with my boyfriend Ben almost a year ago and we decided we wanted a basset. Oh and we all live in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Ben had always loved bassets and although I had never really been around one I though they were adorable and was on board. In March of 2008 my sister's friend who has two "married" bassets were going to have babies and we went to look at them and left with two! They are the best things ever! I had always had dogs growing up but I never loved them like I love these guys. In fact their Mom is prego again and I just could take all of them! We take them to a doggy daycare place here once a week so they can play with other dogs and they love it. They are great with kids and they were easy to house train (well as easy as that can be). Basically bassets are the best dogs around :) Here are a few pics.

How cute! Bassets really do have a way of melting your heart. Welcome to the forums and thanks for sharing your babies with us. It is fun seeing people love their dogs so much. When our young, male basset had a little bout of pano he stopped eating well. The pain in his rear leg made him lose his appetite and he would hold it up and/or limp along. We took him to the vet just to make sure there wasn't anything serious going on in his leg and got some pain meds to help manage his discomfort. He was back to his silly self in just a of couple days and eating much better. Gramma Jane had suggested Pano was his problem and she was right on target. If Reggie's leg is bothering him that might be contributing to him not wanting to eat as well as he had before. Did both his ouchie leg and his not wanting to eat happen in the same time frame?

I am pretty sure it has all started happneing around the same time. He is such a trooper that I think he tried to not limp as bad at first...but now it's hurting him pretty bad I think. I am going to keep him from playing really hard for a few days and see what happens. I am not going to send him to daycare this week and so hopefully that will help. His front leg did this a few weeks ago and our vet who is amazing and loves our guys gave him an anti-inflamatory and he was golden in a few days. So if I don't see it getting any better within a couple days I'll call the vet and have him look at it. I just hate to see my guys sad and hurt! I can understand that eating might not be comfortable because he has to stand while eating and so I could see why those might be linked....I honestly hadn't even though of that....Thanks! I started Jane's regimen this morning....I will keep going with that and see what happens if he just won't give up then what should I do? Cause now I'm worried it's just his leg bothering him....if it's not one thing it's another :) but it's totally worth it!

Sounds very much to me like pano Here is a link on the problem to give you some insight. http://www.vetinfo.com/dencyclopedia/depano.htmlHe would probably do better on some anti inflammatory. As this can be very painful and yes stop him from eating. That is why I said when starting the food thing to make sure the dogs are healthy. Hopefully they are off puppyfood and eating a good quality adult food.. Also make sure your vet does not use Rimadyl for pain medication for Bassets. Pano can reoccur throughout a young dogs early years up to 2 years old.

He wasn't really limping as bad yesterday as he is today....so I for sure think this could be it. Although he still seemed interested in my dinner Ben is going to take him into the vet first thing tomorrow and hopefully get him on something to help with the pain. I really really appreciate all the insight! Have a great night and I'll keep you all posted!

well the news isn't great. reggie tore his knee tendons...the same as a human acl. he may have to have surgery but not right away. the doctor has put him on deramaxx and an antibiotic as he was also running a fever. he is also on a caloritic supplement as he is still not eating. poor baby! we go back to the doctor in two weeks to see what his progress if any is. with him not eating his food my doctor made the comment (after I said that he wouldn't eat anything but his treats) that he didn't care if I made him a steak....he has got to eat! i was thinking about baking/boiling some chicken and carrots to see if he would eat that. what are your thoughts about that? i have tried everything and he will not react to any of it. p

acl's are nasty..... and expensive to repair. Lets hope it is mendable on it's own. When my dogs are sick they like scrambled eggs with butter, hot dogs, but they are usually really sick if they don't' eat.
Not being my bloodline I don't know what to tell you. I can't understand why an acl would stop any dog from eating. It is not painful they just have no strength in the knee to put weight on it. It could be a little discomfort. But I still feel he is being a pill about not eating.
